Belfast City Council must do more to ensure regular bin collections

Published: 1 April, 2008

East Belfast Sinn Féin Representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has criticised the lack of concern shown by Belfast City Council in relation to bin collections within the Short Strand.

"This has been an on-going issue and the relevant people within the City Council are well aware of it, last year I joined a number of concerned residents in meeting with the Council's Cleansing Department on this issue and we received assurances that our concerns would be taken on board."

"It would seem apparent that this hasn't been the case. I, as well as the local residents affected, have been in contact with the Council and as yet we still have two weeks worth of rubbish gathering in our community; this cannot go on and particularly can't go on immediately after the Easter holidays.. Understandably residents are very distressed and concerned about the potential dangers with this amount of rubbish allowed to pile up on their doorstep."

"I am calling on BCC and cleansing services in particular to get their act together on this matter as it would appear that the community seem to be the only people serious about keeping our area clean."
