Sirocco site must not be allowed to go to waste

Sinn Féin Pottinger Representative Niall Ó Donnghaile and South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey have expressed concern about the long-term use of the former Sirocco Works site in Belfast. Their comments come after an extensive engagement with the owners of the land at Sirocco, the Carvill Group, who it has been revealed are in the process of engaging with creditors. GAA underprovided for in provision of pitches - Hargey

Laganbank Sinn Féin councillor Deirdre Hargey has said that the GAA is totally underprovided for when it comes to the provision of pitches in Belfast and has said that Sinn Féin will continue this work to try and bring an end to the inequalities in relation to this sport and give it the same recognition as other sports enjoy. Deirdre was speaking after Sinn Féin councillors at Belfast City Hall last night met representatives of all GAA Clubs across the city in a meeting to discuss in detail the Pitches Strategy and the proposals outlined by the Belfast City Council. Maskey Welcomes Inclusion of "Stop Notice" Power in Planning Bill.

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey, speaking in the wake of last week's meeting organised by a coalition of South Belfast residents groups to discuss planning issues, has welcomed the fact that Councils are to have the power to place immediate "Stop Notices" on developments where developers breach the terms of their planning approval. Urgent need for special economic zone status - Ó Muilleoir

Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has stated that the unemployment figures published yesterday highlight the need for urgent action to be taken in delivering the special enterprise zone status promised by David Cameron. Justice Minister should repeal anti-Gaelic 1737 Act - Ó Muilleoir

Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has echoed the call made by Party colleague Raymond McCartney MLA in calling upon the Justice Minister David Ford to urgently look at repealing the discriminatory 1737 Act which prohibits the use of the Irish Language in Courts here. Máirtín Ó Muilleoir was speaking after the Assembly's Justice Committee last week received a presentation from the Human Rights Commission in relation to the draft Justice Bill which stated that the 1737 Act does not comply with the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. McDevitt support for unionist veto disgraceful

Sinn Féin Assembly member Alex Maskey has said that SDLP representative Conal McDevitt needs 'to get real if he thinks that nationalists in the north are about to stand by and watch him try and barter away hard fought gains in successive negotiations for his own narrow political ambitions'. He accused the SDLP representative of disgracefully aligning himself with unionist attempts to undermine the checks and balances at the Assembly. Mr Maskey's comments came after Mr McDevitt called for changes in the Stormont rules to allow the Assembly to remove a Minister from the Executive, thereby handing unionists a veto over nationalist Ministers. Concern expressed at Castlereagh Council employment figures

Castlereagh Sinn Féin representatives James Irwin (Castlereagh South) and Laura Keenan (Castlereagh West) have expressed concern that, despite Castlereagh Borough Council having claimed in 2007 that they were working with the Equality Commission to address its poor record of employing Catholics, the Council's employment levels for Catholics has actually decreased. They were speaking after South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey wrote to request meetings to discuss the issue with both the Chief Executive of Castlereagh Council and the Equality Commission.
