South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has, on behalf of Sinn Féin in South and East Belfast, congratulated Pearse Doherty on his election as a TD in Donegal South West saying that the result sends a clear message of rejection to the current Government. Sinn Féin public meeting: Prospects for Cancún and beyond

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún will speak on 'Prospects for Cancún and beyond', a public meeting hosted by South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey, at 11.30am, Friday December 3, Wellington Park Hotel, Belfast. The meeting has been organised in advance of Bairbre de Brún travelling to the Cancún climate summit as part of the European Parliament's official delegation. The Cancún summit takes place form November 29 to December 10. Other speakers at the South Belfast meeting will be James Orr from Friends of the Earth and Gary McFarlane from Stop Climate Chaos. Ó Donnghaile welcomes Minister's commitment to social housing on Mountpottinger Barracks site

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed confirmation by the Social Development Minister Alex Attwood that he will instruct the Housing Executive to register its interest in acquiring the former Mountpottinger PSNI barracks site with a view to tackling the housing need in the area. South Belfast based community worked Deirdre Hargey has been nominated by Sinn Féin activists in the Laganbank area to be co-opted onto Belfast City Council, replacing Alex Maskey MLA who last month stood down from his role as a councillor in line with Sinn Féin's policy of removing dual mandates from elected representatives. McDevitt should stop trying to score cheap points by misleading his constituents

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that many members of the public will be perplexed as to why the SDLP's Conal McDevitt is saying one thing in private and another in public to the media. Alex Maskey's comments come after Mr McDevitt's recent comments on Radio Ulster contradicted his previous position, stated at a Committee meeting, in relation to Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy's plans for NI Water. £36m spent on private landlords in South Belfast could be better spent - Maskey

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that the millions of pounds being paid out to private landlords in South Belfast in Housing Benefit is money wasted and could be better spent on building social and affordable homes, adding that there needs to be changes in housing policy here to allow the Housing Executive to start building houses again. Alex Maskey was speaking after it was revealed by the social Development Minister Alex Attwood that a total of £35,878,279.10 was paid out to private landlords owning properties in the South Belfast area in the past three years. Maskey welcomes ICTU meeting to discuss economy

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed yesterday's meeting between representatives of Sinn Féin and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU). Among the items discussed at the meeting Were Sinn Féin's economic proposals and the budget. Maskey encourages Village homeowners to avail of Housing Executive grants

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey is encouraging the owners of private homes in the Village area to apply for grants being made available the Housing Executive to retain and improve homes in the area. Alliance Party must explain Water Tax U-turn to voters

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has expressed his disappointment at the Alliance Party's call for the introduction of a Water Tax in the North. And has said that the Party must now explain it's turn around to its voters. In opposing the Alliance Party's call Alex Maskey reiterated Sinn Féin's support for Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy's stated intention to protect the water service from privatisation and to prevent the introduction of a separate Water Tax. Adams addresses South Belfast Sinn Féin business breakfast discussion

Sinn Féin MLA for south Belfast Alex Maskey was this morning joined in the constituency by Minister for Regional Development Conor Murphy MP and Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams MP. They were attending a breakfast briefing and discussion for business figures from throughout the city. Mr Adams addressed those in attendance and outlined the recent proposals put forward by the party to help stimulate the economy in the north. The event also allowed the business people to engage directly with the Sinn Féin leadership during a useful question and answers session. The event is the first in number planned to engage directly with the small and medium sized business sector over the coming weeks and months. Read full article

Maskey call for end to secret party donations

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has called for an end to the policy of keeping donations to political parties in the North secret. The South Belfast MLA has also called for the current threshold of £7500 for reportable donations to be lowered to £500. The demands are contained in the Sinn Féin submission to the British Government's consultation which is examining whether or not to keep political donations secret. Read full article
