27,647 children benefit from primary school uniform grant introduced by Minister Ruane

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed a response from the Education Minister to a written Assembly question, submitted by Party colleague John O'Dowd, which shows that 27,647 children benefited from the primary school uniform grant first introduced by Caitríona Ruane in 2009. The total grants paid out amounted to £988,336. Read full article

"Stand Up For Your Rights" - Maskey

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has urged people to support the European-wide Day of Action against public spending cuts on Wednesday September 29. The Day of Action, which was called by the European Trade Union Confederation, is demanding 'No to austerity - Priority for jobs and growth', and will see workers demonstrating across Europe. A general strike is planned in the Spanish state, while 100,000 workers are expected to rally in Brussels. Read full article

Lower Ormeau eviction serves as warning to anti-social elements

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed the news that the Housing Executive, this morning, successfully terminated the tenancy of a family in the Lower Ormeau area. The tenancy was terminated on the grounds that the tenancy agreement was broken due to reported anti-social and drug related activities emanating from the property, and a conviction for possession and intent to supply after drugs were found on the property. The South Belfast MLA added that today's success should serve as a warning to others within the community who continue to engage in anti-social and drug related activity. Read full article

Minister must act on Planning Service failures to enforce Airport seat limits

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey and his Party colleague, East Belfast representative Niall Ó Donnghaile, have called upon the Environment Minister, Edwin Poots, to formally respond to the revelation that Planners have failed to enforce the 2 million seat sale limit at Belfast City's George Best Airport for almost a year. They made the call after the information was disclosed at last week's Environment Committee Meeting. It was also revealed that Planners had failed to investigate whether late night flights at the airport were down to legitimately acceptable reasons. Read full article
