Reduce bills for low-income homes' - Maskey

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that energy companies are to come under renewed pressure to introduce social tariffs to reduce bills for vulnerable customers. The South Belfast MLA was speaking after the Consumer Council confirmed that in intends to commission new research on the extent of fuel poverty and the cost of implementing such tariffs where fuel companies subsidise reduced bills for low-income households. Fears disabled being wrongly denied benefits

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has said he is very concerned by reports in the media that thousands of seriously ill and disabled people who are unable to work are being wrongly denied benefits and that the new system of assessing Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) was simply not working. 'New rules will guarantee fair pay for contractors' - Parker

Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Vincent Parker has welcomed confirmation that all public spending contracts must now include fair terms and conditions for sub-contractors at every level of the project. Maskey comments on HET reports

Commenting on reports that the PSNI Chef Constable Matt Baggott is proposing that the HET should complete its work within three years, Sinn Féin Policing Board member Alex Maskey said that 'any proposal to wind up the HET needs to be done in a way that reassures those families who wish to use this mechanism that their particular cases will be properly dealt with first'. Maskey calls for Bill of Rights support in Assembly chamber

Speaking in support of a Sinn Féin motion in the Assembly yesterday afternoon South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey expressed concern that the British Government's proposals for a Bill of Rights ignores the advice from both the Bill of Rights Forum and the Human Rights Commission that social and economic protections must be central to any Bill of Rights. Alex Maskey reiterated the Sinn Féin call for a rejection of the NIO consultation proposals and for people to support the need to ensure that the rights of all citizens are maximised.
