Maskey welcomes DEL Ministers commitment to tackling Holyland issues

Published: 4 July, 2011

Following a meeting with DEL Minister Stephen Farry on Monday, South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed his commitment to addressing issues in the Holyland area.

Mr Maskey said:

"I had requested todays meeting to raise with the Minister our view of the ongoing problems within the Holyland and the need for leadership at Ministerial level to address these issues.

We had welcomed the efforts of the previous Minister, Reg Empey, and in particular his Holyland Stakeholders Forum initiative. It became clear however to residents and ourselves that the Forum did not have the necessary support and backing from other Departments to take a strategic approach to resolving these problems on an long term basis.

While we await the report from the current consultation being carried out under Belfast City Council, I certainly welcome the commitment given by the Minister today to look at the reports recommendations and to give Ministerial leadership.

We would appeal to the other Departments, particularly DSD nad DOE, to give the same commitment at this stage"
