Maskey challenges DUP claims on transfer of policing powers

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Policing Alex Maskey has described the publication of the draft legislation to give effect to the transfer of powers on policing and justice as another significant step towards the transfer of these powers in the near future. Mr. Maskey also described the DUP leader's claims that the Bill represents gains for the DUP and a rewriting of the GFA as bogus, pathetic and electorally driven. Read full article

Parker welcomes Roads Service commitments

Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Vincent Parker has welcomed commitments given today by the Roads Service in relation to landscaping the area around the upgraded bridge at Finaghy Road North. East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has hailed tonight's discussion based on the theme "Civil Rights or Civil Unrest?", as a huge success. The discussion took place in the Short Strand Community centre and the panel included Francie Molloy MLA, Fergus O'Hare, Roy Garland and Paul Bew while the audience included those from all sections of the East Belfast community. Parker and residents to join Roads Service on site visit

Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Vincent Parker and a number of local residents will tomorrow, Thursday 19th February, join a representative of the Roads Service during a site visit at the new bridge at Finaghy Road North. East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile, speaking after tonight's East Belfast DPP meeting which focused on the future of Mountpottinger PSNI barracks, has said that tonight's presentation by the PSNI underlines the case for the removal of this barracks. Maskey expresses anger after young woman mugged on Ormeau Road

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has expressed his anger after a young girl was mugged at the Cooke Street/Ormeau Road junction late this afternoon. The South Belfast MLA said that it was particularly disturbing that this attack took place in broad daylight on a main road. Read full article

Maskey confident community will be consulted on any attempt to revive South Belfast ring-road proposals

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that he is confident that the Department for Regional Development (DRD) will consult with local communities on any attempt to revive proposals for a Belfast City Centre Ring-Road (which would see the widening of Cromac Street, the widening of the Cromac Street/Ormeau Road junction and the replacing of Ormeau Avenue with 'Bankmore Link'). Alex Maskey raised the issue directly with Minister Conor Murphy MP after learning that DRD representatives held a meeting with groups who were not fully representative of the local communities in the area to discuss the revival of the Ring-Road proposals. Environment Minister Sammy Wilson challenged on Climate Change

Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Vincent Parker and Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre deBrún have challenged the Environment Minister Sammy Wilson to state if he is willing to take on the challenge the EU is setting the Assembly by dealing with climate change or if he will allow the north's small and medium enterprises as well as our environment to suffer because of his lack of action. Mindless thugs behind racist attack

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that he is horrified at reports of a racist attack on a Bangladeshi student outside his home on the Donegall Road at the weekend. Mr Maskey has said that those in positions of political responsibility who have, in recent weeks, made irresponsible comments in relation to foreign nationals living here must bear some of the responsibility for such attacks.
