Minister Ritchie must back words up with action in relation to Sirocco site

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has called upon Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie to match her commitment, given in writing, to work to secure 20% social and affordable housing on East Belfast's Sirocco works site, with actions. Mr Ó Donnghaile was speaking after meeting with representatives of developers, the Carvill Group, where it was revealed that despite repeated attempts to arrange a meeting with representatives of the Department of Social Development to discuss the proposed Sirocco works development, they have been unable to secure such a meeting. Long Kesh site announcement must not become excuse for a stadium at Ormeau Park

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that the recent announcements by Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Gregory Campbell in relation to the proposed developments at the Long Kesh site cannot be used as an excuse to build a stadium at Ormeau Park. Read full article

Parker welcomes Roads Service landscaping commitment

Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Vincent Parker has welcomed a commitment given by the Roads Service that their representatives will hold a site visit in relation to landscaping issues around the new bridge at Finaghy Road North. Mr Parker also stated that he is pleased that the Arts Council has pledged to commit money to make the bridge itself more visually acceptable. Read full article

People should not be intimidated or confused by the Electoral Office

Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Vincent Parker has said that no-one should feel intimidated or be left confused by the latest initiative from the Electoral Office. He was speaking after the Electoral Office began a campaign targeting households with high numbers of adults on the electoral register with letters that 'invite' people to ask for their registration to be 'reviewed'. Sinn Féin continue work to with Lower Ormeau community and PSNI to tackle anti-social issue

Sinn Féin has continued to work with the local community and the PSNI to develop a strategy to tackle the rise in anti-social behaviour in the Lower Ormeau area. Following the recent, extremely well-attended vigil in the area, Party representatives have been working with local community leaders to keep the focus on this issue. As a result of a number of meetings with the PSNI they have pledged extra resources to the area and have developed a six-week strategy to work with the local community to tackle the rise in anti-social behaviour. Closure of A&E department at the Ulster Hospital

SHOCK AS HEALTH DEPARTMENT SPENDS £19.4m ON PRIVATE SECTOR TREATMENT

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has hit out at what he calls the continuing 'creeping privatisation' of the Health Service. Mr Maskey was speaking as he expressed his shock disbelief that the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety have spent, approximately £19.4 million, treating orthopaedic patients within the private sector, including over 12,000 patients in the Belfast Trust area, between 2006 to 2008. As this money was being spent it was confirmed that the Department intends to close beds in at the orthopaedic ward at South Belfast's Musgrave Park Hospital. Read full article

Ó Donnghaile responds to reports of Short Strand bus depot sell-off

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile, responding to reports today, that Translink are planning to sell off their depot in the Short Strand area has said that the news will cause obvious concern for those employed in the depot and that he will be seeking to clarify Translink's position on the matter. He also added that if reports proved to be true that he would be seeking to meet with Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie and Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy to ensure that the local community has an input in any future development on the site. MASKEY TO FOLLOW UP ANTI-SOCIAL VIGIL WITH PSNI MEETING

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey will meet with representatives of the PSNI next Thursday to discuss how to best tackle the upsurge in anti-social behaviour in the Lower Ormeau area. This meeting has been arranged as one of a number of attempts, which included last night's solidarity vigil with those who have been victims of crime in the area, to tackle the problem in the area. Criminalisation of Dialogue is the wrong path for Spanish Government - Maskey

Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey will travel to the Basque Country today, Wednesday the 7th January, in order to attend as an observer the trial of the former Basque Country Assembly President, Juan José Ibarretxe, and the Basque leader of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Party), Francisco Javier "Patxi" López. Both men are accused of speaking with Herri Batasuna leaders Arnaldo Otegi and Pernando Barrena. The Spanish authorities banned Herri Batasuna in 2003. Read full article

MASKEY URGES SUPPORT FOR ANTI-SOCIAL VIGIL

South Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey has urged residents in the Lower Ormeau area to support a vigil organised by the local community for this Thursday 8th January at 6:30pm (to take place on the Ormeau Road, at the top of Rutland Street and Farnham Street) to show solidarity with those residents who have been victims of crime and to send a clear message to these local thugs that the community will not tolerate their criminal behaviour. Gaza attacks must stop immediately

Call for better labelling of products to encourage more recycling

Maskey welcomes prescription charges move
