Unionists challenged on Lisburn Road flags

Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Stiofan Long has said that if areas in South Belfast are to be truly regarded as 'mixed' areas then unionists and loyalists need to show political leadership and face up to the challenge of the flags issue. Mr Long was speaking after receiving complaints from residents on the Lisburn Road about flags being put up in the area. Read full article

Need for speedy settlement to Post Office dispute

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said that he is disappointed that Royal Mail and the Communications Workers Union (CWU) have failed to reach an agreement over the current pay dispute which could now lead to a one day strike next Friday 29th June, with further dates planned. £3 billion lent to students - drop in University places uptake

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has called on parents to ensure that their children do not tamper with water hydrants in the Short Strand area. Mr Ó Donnghaile's call comes after a number of homes were last night left without water because of the actions of a small group of children in setting off water hydrants in the area. Maskey welcomes Consumer Council involvement in tackling flooding issue

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed the involvement of the Consumer Council in trying to deal with the issues around the recent flooding and has said that Sinn Féin will continue to work with the Consumer Council to ensure that residents get a fair hearing from 'Northern Ireland Water' and to try and ensure that this flooding is not repeated. MEPs demand release of 45 Palestinian MPs

Bairbre de Brún MEP today joined 44 other MEPs from a range of political groups in the European Parliament to highlight the plight of the 45 Palestinian Members of Parliament who have been imprisoned by the Israeli authorities. The number of MEPs was chosen to represent the 45 Palestinian MPs who have been detained. The 45 MEPs have demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the Palestinian MPs, standing symbolically at the outset of the debate on the Middle East in the European Parliament. The debate was opened by Javier Solana, the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy. Read full article

Balmoral Sinn Féin halt proposed closure of railway station

Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Stiofan Long and South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey have welcomed an agreement with Translink to establish a steering group which will see local residents and political representatives working along with Translink to help reduce vandalism at the Finaghy Halt Rail station and ultimately secure the long term future of the site. The agreement comes after Sinn Féin held an emergency meeting with Translink after it was revealed that the transport company was considering closing the station. Read full article

Lands should Be released to Deal with Housing Crisis

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has echoed calls by party colleagues calling upon the Housing Minister, Margaret Ritchie not to wait on a response from the Executive to see if there is additional money for a social and affordable house-building programme. Sinn Féin South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey has said he is absolutely disgusted after Raw Sewerage flooded in the Lower Ormeau Road area. de Brún calls for Justice for Palestine ahead of Patriarch meeting

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has called for justice for Palestine in advance of meetings with the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Monsignor Michel Sabbah in the coming days. On Sunday, Ms de Brún will attend mass in St Peter's Cathedral in Belfast which will be concelebrated by the Latin Patriarch and the Bishop of Down and Connor, the Most Reverend Patrick Walsh.
