Sinn Féin committed to tackling East Belfast inequality

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has said that Sinn Féin will be working to move forward the agenda set out by the two governments in the St Andrew's document in order to ensure the implementation of an anti-poverty strategy which the British government have committed themselves to in the document. The implementation of this strategy will ensure that areas such as Ballymacarret get a fair allocation of investment to tackle inequality and deprivation in the area, which ranks the 9th most deprived area in the Six Counties. South/East Belfast Inequality & Sectarianism discussed at CAJ meeting

South and East Belfast Sinn Féin representatives Alex Maskey MLA and Niall Ó Donnghaile recently met with the Committee for the Administration of Justice (CAJ) to discuss the implications for South and East Belfast of the Committee's recently published Equality study. Speaking after the meeting Alex Maskey MLA said that "We will go away and digest the facts on inequality in South and East Belfast which have been highlighted by the CAJ. We will discuss these issues with the wider Party in South and East Belfast in order to develop a way forward in which we can challenge the sectarian inequality which still exists in this area today". Maskey welcomes presentation of flooding report to the Lower Ormeau community

Government must now move to defer Water Reform legislation

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed the legal victory for the consumer in the case taken by the Consumer Council that exposes the failure of government to consult fully over its water reform legislation. MASKEY MEETS HANSON ON RATES ISSUE

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey, speaking after meeting British Direct Rule Minister David Hanson on the rates issue, has called for more money to be made available to provide relief for groups such as the elderly and disabled. He also stressed the need for any rates relief provided to students to benefit students and not merely be allowed to line the pockets of landlords. The Sinn Féin delegation, comprising of South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey and Party colleague John O'Dowd MLA met David Hanson yesterday afternoon. Read full article

AREA WARDEN SCHEME SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO INCLUDE STRANMILLIS

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has backed calls by residents in part of the Stranmillis area to have the neighbourhood warden scheme, currently in place in the Holylands area, to be extended to the Stranmillis area from the Ulster Museum to the Stranmillis round-about. Read full article

TIME TO IMPLEMENT RESIDENTS ONLY PARKING IN SOUTH BELFAST

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has called for the urgent implementation of Residents Only Parking schemes throughout South Belfast. The South Belfast MLA made the call in the week that it was announced that, since the enforcement of parking restrictions were decriminalised, there has been a large increase in the number of parking tickets handed out. Process is moving in the right direction

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey, today met with Party colleagues Gerry Adams, Chief Negotiator Martin McGuinness and senior Ard Chomhairle member Gerry Kelly. The meeting was held after Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness and Gerry Kelly returned from London this morning after 48 hours of intense and detailed discussions with the British government. Speaking after the meeting Alex Maskey MLA said that he was satisfied that Sinn Féin has kept the British government to the Good Friday Agreement. Time to tackle loopholes surrounding HMO issue

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has called upon British Direct Rule Minister David Cairns to move to close the loopholes in dealing with the HMO (Houses in Multiple Occupation) issue by ensuring that the definition of a HMO is redefined to adequately cover other rental accommodation such as flats and bed-sits. The South Belfast MLA has also said that it is also essential that the Housing Executive are given adequate resources to register existent HMO's if we are to ensure that plans to cap the number of HMO's is to be a success". Disappointment at SDLP's defeatist attitude to Water Tax

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has hit out at the SDLP's defeatist attitude on the issue of the Water Tax saying that all parties must work together to ensure that such charges are not brought in by the British Government. The South Belfast MLA was speaking after SDLP Deputy Leader Alasdair McDonnell claimed at a recent public meeting in South Belfast that the argument on Water Charges had been "all but lost" and that politicians must now look to the fairest way of measuring payment.
