Sinn Fein to push for Free Prescription Charges

Balmoral Sinn Fein representative and Chairperson of the Sinn Fein Health Advisory Group, Stiofan Long, has announced that the Party are set to launch a major campaign on Monday 27th March, in the Long Gallery at Stormont at 12pm, to drive for the introduction of free prescription charges. MASKEY WELCOMES £100,000 TO IMPROVE LOWER ORMEAU AREA

South Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed plans by Belfast City Council to spend over £100,000 on improving the main Lower Ormeau Road. He has warned, however, that these plans must have real benefits to the people of the area as opposed to being merely cosmetic to make the area look better for people driving through. He has also called upon other statutory bodies and traders to come on board and play a role in this development. Read full article

Maskey Challenges Woodward to deliver promised report on the flooding of the Ormeau road.

Cllr Alex Maskey MLA has called on the Minister for Regional Development Shaun Woodward to produce the promised report on way the Lower Ormeau area was flooded with water and sewerage, and also what pre-emptive measures will be put in place to prevent this from re-occurring. Four months on from the disaster there are still a number of families homeless who have not received any compensation. Read full article

Sinn Féin announce details of 'Failte' initiative to mark Intercultural week

Sinn Féin spokesperson on racism Alex Maskey MLA has announced details of a number of local government initiatives being taken by Sinn Féin Mayor and Chairs across Ireland to mark Intercultural week (19th - 25th March) and International Day Against Racism on March 21st. The 'Failte' initiative is being run by Sinn Féin first citizens in Moyle, Derry City, Kerry, Fermanagh, Dungannon, Monaghan, Omagh, Strabane, Magherafelt and Newry and Mourne councils to welcome new citizens Read full article

Belfast Education Board cuts even greater than first feared

South Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey has said that it now appears that there is a shortfall of some £6.6 million in the Belfast Education Library Board budget after Angela Smith's intervention in relation to £3 million that the board had hoped to be available for services. Read full article

PREDICTED SOUTH BELFAST HOUSE PRICE INCREASES: Government must tackle false housing economy

South Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey, speaking after it was revealed that a number of Estate Agents expect house prices across Malone, Balmoral, Stranmillis and Rosetta to surge, has called upon the Government to take immediate steps to tackle this false economy which is seeing increasing numbers of homes being repossessed. The price increase was being predicted by Estate Agents as a result of the scrapping of the 11+ which will see these areas come under the catchment areas of what are regarded as the top schools in Belfast. BUY-TO-LET MARKET MUST BE EXAMINED IF WE ARE TO MAINTAIN STABLE AND VIABLE COMMUNITIES

South Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey has called for an examination of the impact of private developers on the buy-to-let market and the effect of landlords buying up property to turn them into Homes of Multiple Occupancy (HMO's) is having on house prices in South Belfast. The call comes after recent statistics showed that the number of first time buyers on the housing market is dropping. NIE price rise will hit those least able to pay
